Delicious Vegetables

A cookbook about delicious vegetables-Pakaroy. They include chaplu, chaom, banana flower and wing bean. The book is written in Thai with beautiful pictures and it includes many Thai recipies
that are easy to follow.

Some of the recipies include meat but this can be substituted with bean curd or tofu in order to get the full health benefits. I will post a few of the book's recipies from time to time.

Animals and World Religions

Interesting new book with a cover picture from a temple in Kanjanaburi famous for its tigers.
Despite increasing public attention to animal suffering, little seems to have changed; human beings continue to exploit billions of animals in factory farms, medical laboratories, and elsewhere. In this wide-ranging and perceptive study, Lisa Kemmerer shows how spiritual writings and teachings in seven major religious traditions can help people to consider their ethical obligations toward other creatures. Dr. Kemmerer examines the role of nonhuman animals in scripture and myth, in the lives of religious exemplars, and by drawing on foundational philosophical and moral teachings. She begins with a study of indigenous traditions around the world, then focuses on the religions of India (Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain) and China (Daoism and Confucianism), and finally, religions of the Middle East (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). At the end of each chapter, Kemmerer explores the inspiring lives and work of contemporary animal advocates who are motivated by a personal religious commitment. Animals and World Religions demonstrates that rethinking how we treat nonhuman animals is essential for anyone claiming one of the world's great religions.

Areetam Foundation

Today is the start of the vegetarian festival. I went to the Areetam Foundation, which is a herbal medical center, where vegetarian food is being served for the nine days of the festival.
The place has a wonderful smell of herbs from the many bottles on the shelves as well as beautiful Buddha images in a big shrine in the middle of the room. The Chinese music helped to complete the nice atmosphere of the place.

Gac fruit

A lesser known fruit grown in Thailand and all over SE Asia. Researchers from Thammasat University's medical faculty say that studies carried out around the world indicate that gac fruit can cure different type of diseases.
One grower I have come across is the Siam Thamakham Healthy Farm in Kanjanaburi.

Menu

A waiter holding up the vegetarian menu at the Huen Lampoon restaurant Taling Chan Bangkok.

Thirty years ago it was very difficult to find vegetarian food in Bangkok. There was only one vegetarian restaurant of note, the Whole Earth on Soi Langsuan. Today there are over a hundred. Now an increasing number of ordinary restaurants have a vegetarian menu and serve a tasty meal, in contrast to the bland food which was served as a special order in years past.

Swastika

Last week I went to Wat Baromracha. It is a big new Chinese temple in Nontaburi province. One thing that caught my attention was the swastikas on some of the Buddha images.
The swastika is a symbol that can often be seen in the East. Here it represents good not evil.
The Thai greeting 'sawat di' comes from the same Sanskrit root as the word swastika and means wellness and well being.
The red swastika sign can often be seen outside chinese vegetarian restaurants in Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan.
